Dear State Director,

Thanks to the NAEPDC for helping to distribute the following very brief survey that we hope you will answer. In fact, we hope you will do it now, because we imagine that your desks are like ours and things sink below the surface very quickly.

We, Beth Bingman and Mary Ziegler from the University of Tennessee Center for Literacy Studies, are writing a chapter for the NCSALL Review of Adult Learning and Literacy about the various ways state adult education systems address program improvement. From this survey we hope to learn how many states have state-wide program improvement initiatives and what approaches are being used. The information from the survey will not be reported by state name. We will say something like “ x number of states report using a state-wide system of program improvement.”

We plan to describe what some states are doing in more detail, so we may contact you for more information about your particular approach. We will, of course, not proceed with publishing any additional information about your state without contacting you directly and obtaining your written permission. If you have any questions, please contact Beth Bingman at bingman@utk.edu  865-974-6618 or Mary Ziegler at mziegler@utk.edu 865-974-0453.

Thank you in advance for your help and a quick reply.

Sincerely,

Beth Bingman Mary Ziegler
